about

Jeff Goodman was one of the first friends I made in my guitar class junior year of high school. A genuinely nice guy who disappeared mysteriously a little bit after half the year was over. However, we reconnected roughly late 2010 while I was at MJC over talking about Myosin, of which he would soon become their bassist. At this time he was still promoting his band at the time, Bad Fusion, or as it was called by then, Love's Company, and was even passing out CDs at school - one of which I got. Over the years I started listening to it more often and was amazed to hear this song on it - an amazing, slow, grungy emotional ballad of sorts! It floored me, and I knew I had to cover it someday. By the time this became a reality, I had also struck up a friendship with Matthew Torres, who was also part of the band. We had hung out on a few occasions and kept in touch sorta over the years, and one day I asked him if it was cool to cover this song. It was, and so I turned it into a four-part SATB choir song.

The first half is like an approximate but a capella version of the original, and the second half is effectively a round with a pretty climax that I am legitimately surprised at myself for pooting forth. There is an obvious tonal shift halfway through the song - probably the best indicator of "when did Dan Vallerand record this song, anyways?" for those playing at home. The bass part approximates the bassline of the original song, the tenor part approximates the original main vocal line, and the alto and soprano bits provide extra harmony. I must give credit to the choir teacher of Johansen High School for this because I was really stumped at how to arrange the song, but I had bumped into her at my work in late September and asked politely for a couple of tips while we chatted about choral arrangements in general.
